Born in Chambok Thom Village, Sleng Commune, Chi Kreng District, Siem Reap province Cambodia, he experienced firsthand the horrors of the civil wartime from 1979 to 1998. Growing up in the Kampong Khleang fishing community, Hok faced unimaginable challenges. Witnessing people killing each other and enduring food shortages due to the fighting, he had to rely on his own resourcefulness to survive. In the absence of a government school, he sought education with Buddhist monks at the temple. Despite the hardships, Hok’s thirst for knowledge never wavered.

Opportunity knocked when Hok had the chance to study at Sotr Nikum Primary School, followed by Dam Dek High School. Working tirelessly during his time in Dam Dek, he even braved the darkness of the night to fetch water from rice fields, overcoming his fears for the sake of his family’s survival. In 1991, Hok seized a golden opportunity to study in Siem Reap city, residing at Wat Preah Enkosei pagoda alongside monks and other young boys.

From Wat Preah Enkosa Junior High School to 10 January 1979 High School, Hok’s dedication to his studies remained unwavering. In 1997, he earned his bachelor’s degree and planned to continue his education in Phnom Penh. Tragically, on 29th July 1998, Hok’s father fell victim to a robber in a dense forest. Determined to find closure, Hok embarked on a harrowing journey, spending days and nights with local government armies and policemen in search of his father’s body.

After his father’s funeral, Hok made the selfless decision to put his education on hold and care for his mother and siblings. For four years, he supported his family through farming and fishing. However, Hok’s relentless pursuit of a better future led him back to Siem Reap city in 2002, where he began working as a tourist taxi driver. In 2007, he transitioned to become a local tour guide in Siem Reap Angkor, even before obtaining his official license.

Finally, in 2013, Hok’s dedication paid off when he received his tour guide licenses for Siem Reap and Phnom Penh tourism regions from The Ministry of Tourism. Since then, he has been a highly qualified English-speaking tour guide, providing exceptional service to visitors from around the world. Hok is now happily married with three children, and his wife’s home business of local home dinners has become a culinary sensation.
